Medellin was a bit hit and miss for us. A pesky public
holiday snuck up on us when we had had a big day planned. We spent all of
Sunday and Monday walking around to centre squares with nobody in sight, closed
restaurants and cafes, and no Plan B. We have now figured out that South
America is much more conservative when it comes to their Sundays and public
holidays than we are back home. Major cities which are usually bustling with
street vendors, party-goers, coffee enthusiasts, foodies and everyone in
between become absolute ghost towns.
So we were forced to skip a few tourist attractions but we
did manage to go paragliding. At $40 it was a bit of a steal and the view from
the surrounding mountains of Medellin is beautiful. That $40 did seem a little
expensive however, when Kassandra had to abort mid-flight due to motion
sickness. Who would have thought?
The incredibly cheap cable car up to Parque Arvi is one of
the cheapest and most rewarding tourist attractions that we have experienced
yet. The park itself isn't anything too special (note the picture of the kids
playing in an ugly puddle of a lake - that's about as much as the park has to offer),
but the cable car is worth it.
