playa maderas, nicaragua

We had actually been in San Juan del Sur before Playa Maderas, but were so unimpressed with it that we didn't take any photos. There's nothing wrong with the place, it's just that it was an Expat town and not really our cup of tea.

We took the 30 minute ride to Playa Maderas and planned to stay a few nights. Upon arrival, we trekked across the busy beach to a more secluded area to reach Matilda's Hostel. If you are planning a visit to this town, take food! Matilda's has a kitchen but there is no food available in the town, not even a mini-mart with a few vegetables on offering. We had to go back into San Juan del Sur to get some food to cook.

We went surfing over a couple of days (boards are $10 a day which adds up) and aside form that, we sat by the beach bonfire, drank rum and chilled out on the beach. We were very ready to leave the place by the last day however. This was because we were downgraded from a comfortable room with a private bathroom to a "casa pequena" (small house) which is basically a hard tent. It's a bitch to get in  and out of, has room for a just double mattress and that's it, only has a fly screen for a door and get's bloody hot. For only $2 less than an actual room, it was hard to swallow. Again, no photos as we were that annoyed with it. Getting to the photos in this post, we were just bored with normal smiley photos, hence the weird poses on the beach.
