mexico city, mexico

We were quite wrecked when we arrived in Mexico city, after an epic week in the desert. We were surprised to see every building was draped in red, green and white fabric, with vendors selling wigs, balloons and flags on every street corner. We had no idea what was going on and found out that Independence Day was coming up. Approximately 100,000 people were expected to cheer "Viva Mexico!" with the president in the Zócalo (centre square). Then we found out that the president ain't the most popular guy at the moment and attendance was way down on previous years. Don't know what the turn out was in the end but the fireworks certainly gave our Australia Day show a run for it's money.
